Create Transparent Typography in Adobe Illustrator

Trends in graphic design come and go but some techniques stand the test of time. This tutorial will help you learn to create transparent typography in Adobe Illustrator, to use in all your graphic design projects.

Step One:

Type out one letter. Make sure the letter is big and bold. Then type out your second letter. The letters have to be big and bold so that you can easily overlap them in the next step.

Step two:

Pick out two different colors, one for each letter. Select both letters.

Step three:

Right click and choose Create Outlines.

Step four:

Click Window and scroll down for Pathfinder. Click it.

Step five:

A window will pop up. Click the divide button. This will allow you to select different parts of the letters.

Step six:

Click the Direct Selection Tool. This arrow allows you to pick out sections of the letters that the black Selection Tool arrow doesn’t allow.

Step seven:

Now select the overlapping shape. Click on the Eyedropper tool and select a color that the two colors combined will look like.

Step eight:

Now the two letters overlapped look like transparencies!

Great tutorial Ben! You can achieve the same effect using opacity (by decreasing it) but is not compatible with older formats (i.e – eps8). Keep up the good work!
